Balkan Beat Box figures prominently on the Gypsy Beats and Balkan Bangers compilation with “Bulgarian Chicks.” It’s easily the best track on Balkan Beat Box as well — too often the group falls into the trap of thinking that world music + techno is enough. When the group stops trying so hard musically and gives into its desire to make people dance, it succeeds admirably. “Gross,” featuring the surf-Balkan stylings of Boom Pam, stands as one of the more entertaining hybrids you may ever hear, while the breakbeat of “Sunday Arak” acquits itself easily to the dubby horns that surround it.
